Sam Smith shared a heartwarming moment with fans while on stage on Saturday night in Montreal as they reflected on their career thus far.
The 31-year-old non-binary singer burst into floods of tears as they peered out in disbelief over the packed crowd who were cheering them on.
Alongside a video clip uploaded to their social media, the star explained why the performance over the weekend carried so much sentimental value.
In the footage, the Unholy hitmaker could be seen as they wiped tears from their eyes and lifted the golden microphone to deliver a message to their fans.
They exclaimed: ‘Oh my god. I was trying so hard not to cry. Thank you so much. Thank you so much.
‘Wow, you guys sound and look incredible right now!’
Explaining the meaning behind the evening, Sam penned a heartfelt caption that outlined their fascination with the venue’s location.
The chart-topper wrote: ‘Dear Montréal,
‘When I was in my early teens, a dvd of Rihannas girl gone bad tour came out and the show was at the bell centre. I watched it religiously. I was totally obsessed.
‘Deep down it was my life’s mission to get to that room and to sing on that stage. My first time doing a show on that stage was at 21 years old with the In the lonely hour tour and it was my favourite show of the entire tour. You’ve just done it again.
‘Last night made me feel a type of way I don’t think I’ve ever felt on stage. I’ve never felt so much love or heard an applause like that for myself ever.
‘It makes every hard and challenging moment so worth it. The love for music and art in Montréal is astounding. I’m deeply deeply grateful to you all.
‘You made that confused 14 year old queer kid watching @badgalriri from a TV in a tiny village in Englands dreams come true last night.
‘I love you irrevocably x [sic].’
The star’s fans rushed to share their adoration for the singer in the comments and left words of love and support for them on Instagram.
One said: ‘I had the best night of my life yesterday. thank you sam, we love you.’
While another typed: ‘I was there 10 yrs ago, I was there last night, I will be there next time. You are such an amazing singer/artist. You deserve all that love and affection.’
