In an interview earlier this year, Akshay Kumar had revealed that the poor box office performance of his films in the 1990s pushed him to apply for Canadian citizenship.
Akshay Kumar has finally received his Indian citizenship again as he shared a picture of the official documents on his social media handles on the occasion of India’s 77th Independence Day on August 15, 2023. “Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind!”, he captioned his post.
Fans poured in their congratulations for the actor as one of them wrote, “No more Canadian!!! Congratulations Akshay, What a brilliant day to be a proud Indian”, while another added, “I know how ecstatic you must be for this. You really wanted this to happen for a really long time and thankfully you have Indian citizenship all over again. Many congratulations #AkshayKumar. There wouldn’t have been a better #IndependenceDay gift”.
In an interview earlier this year, Akshay had revealed that the poor box office performance of his films in the 1990s pushed him to apply for Canadian citizenship. Speaking to Aaj Tak, he said, “I thought that ‘bhai, my films are not working and one has to work’. I went there for work. My friend was in Canada and he said, ‘come here’. I applied and I got in. I had just two films left for release and it is just luck that they both became super hits.”
Meanwhile, Akshay’s latest release OMG 2 has received extremely positive reviews and is performing well, despite its clash with Sunny Deol’s action-packed drama Gadar 2 wreaking havoc at the box office. Headlined by Pankaj Tripathi as Lord Shiva devotee and starring Akshay in an extended cameo appearance as Lord Shiva’s messenger, OMG 2 has earned Rs 50 crore in India within four days. The film stresses upon the importance of sex education in Indian schools.
